Energy efficiency is all the rage today with energy saving light bulbs and other initiatives everywhere you look. It’s a noble cause with global warming threatening life on this planet (no exaggeration) and with so many different energy saving options available there’s really no excuse not to join in. One way in which you can be more energy efficient is in how you use your cell phones chargers, and carefully monitoring your use and minimising the time it’s plugged in can really help keep your carbon footprint as small as possible.
Cell phones chargers use up a lot of energy, but what you might not know is that they use the same amount of energy when they’re plugged in to your phones as they do when they’re not. In other words, if your cell phones chargers are plugged in right now, then it’s currently wasting a hell of a lot of energy for no reason. The first and most important way to minimise your cell phones chargers then is not unplug them from the wall socket after you’ve finished charging and before you go to work.
Another time your cell phone’s chargers are wasting electricity is when they’re plugged into your phones but the phones are already charged. If you plug your phones in for charging over night and leave it that way until the morning then, the cell phone’s chargers won’t just stop using up energy once the phone has charged, but will instead continue to use up the energy throughout the day. In order to prevent this happening then, it is far more prudent to plug the phone in for charging when you’re awake. Most phones only take about half an hour to reach full charge, so the opportunities to do this are endless. Try plugging your phone in while you shower and eat breakfast for example before work, or maybe while you eat dinner in the evening. You can plug it in in the dining room too if you really can’t be without it for that long.
An even better and more energy efficient time to charge however is during the commute to work when you drive in. If you have a cell phone battery charger that can be used in the car this means you won’t be wasting any energy, as your car battery renews its own energy when you drive it. Sure cars leave a carbon footprint of their own, but if you would have been driving to work anyway you may as well make the most of that energy and charge your phone at the same time. This way you need never waste energy with your home cell phone battery charger.
Finally, the more subtle way to conserve energy on your mobile phone is to limit how frequently you charge it. You may not realise, but the more you use your phone and the more of the extra features you use (wifi, mp3 player, camera) the faster you’ll drain the phone. Each time you play an mp3 or leave your phone on when it could have been turned off you’re wasting energy. So be careful with your phone use and you can limit the amount of energy you waste with your cell phone battery charger.
