The original Cingular was formed by the merger of BellSouth Wireless and SBC Wireless. The company also recently purchased AT&T Wireless. Cingular's current network uses GSM/GPRS technology, with a legacy TDMA/AMPS network. The company uses both the cellular (800 / 850 MHz) and PCS (1900 MHz) bands. Cingular also offers EDGE high-speed data over most of their network, and is deploying WCDMA (UMTS) technology as their 3G upgrade path, to be followed by HSDPA upgrades in 2006.
